Top 8 Skill Sets for Self-Defense

Self-defense is mostly what you notice and decide before anyone puts hands on you. This short guide names the eight skill sets I teach civilians: awareness, avoidance, decision-making, de-escalation, boundaries, physical skill as a last resort, resilience, and walking in peace.

It is written for ordinary people — not fighters looking for a contest. The goal is the same as our school mission: so that one may walk in peace.

What is inside

The eight skill sets

  1. Awareness — notice people, exits, and changes in the room earlier.
  2. Avoidance — leave or change plans before a problem becomes yours.
  3. Decision-making — choose under pressure without freezing or showing off.
  4. De-escalation — lower heat with words and posture when that is still available.
  5. Boundaries — say no clearly and early, without a long speech.
  6. Physical skill — last resort when you must protect yourself or someone else.
  7. Resilience — recover, report, and return to normal life after an incident.
  8. Walking in peace — train so fear and ego do not run your choices.
